A two-month voyage through the Land Down Under has been cancelled following the tragic passing of an elderly lady who was abandoned by the ship on a distant island.

The passenger had been hiking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but broke off from the group for a break. The liner departed without her and came back several hours later after the crew discovered the lady was missing.

A major search operation found her remains the next day.

Officials are examining the tragedy, alongside police and the official investigator.

Head of the cruise operator said that guests and staff on the Coral Adventurer were told that the remainder of the cruise had been called off due to the "tragic passing and previous technical problems".

Through an announcement, he further stated that guests would be given a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to organize the return journeys of the travelers via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated statement, and said they had "provided a order to the Master" banning any new passengers from getting on the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its return.

Chronology of Events

The ship initially left the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the point of the 80-year-old's demise. The tropical location was the first stop on the itinerary.

Passengers on the vessel - who usually pay tens of thousands of money to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the possibility of trekking or underwater exploration.

Family Response

The child of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "shocked and saddened that the ship left Lizard Island after an planned excursion without my mum".

Through her comments, she portrayed her parent as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a walking club.

"From the little facts we have been told, it seems that there was a breakdown of care and basic judgment," she said.

She added that she hoped the inquiry would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have performed that might have protected Mum's existence".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a very hot day, and mum fell ill on the hill climb," she revealed.

"She was asked her to head down, alone. Then the vessel left, apparently without doing a roll call.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or not long after, she died, alone."

Operator Position

In a statement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the company was "collaborating extensively with officials to aid their investigation".

He mentioned that the organization was "deeply sorry that this has occurred" and had offered its complete assistance to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The ship accommodates up to 120 guests with 46 personnel, according to corporate details. It was purpose-built to reach isolated regions of Australia's coast and is fitted with "small boats" - compact vessels used to transport passengers on shore trips.

Events such as this are uncommon, and passenger vessels have systems to record which passengers are embarking or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship really isn't an option," one expert commented.

Vessel operators consider these methods very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to avoid such events from occurring," the specialist further stated.

"This is probably a stunning - and sad - single occurrence."
