On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
