On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that initial silverware remains his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” the manager said upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the coming months as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal played just after his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

As second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.

Arteta is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that success is required sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

The manager expanded, highlighting the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the club's ownership, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as paramount. “At the end, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad approaches the Everton match managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a hamstring injury that is likely to sideline him for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the team's performances as proof they are close. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
