Space Traveler Shares Depression After Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
