New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
