New York Introduces Portal for Citizens to Report ICE Footage After Detentions of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has rolled out a new reporting form encouraging citizens to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This move follows a day after a significant ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread protests.

US Citizens Held During ICE Operation

A US congressman disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and kept for "about 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Protests erupted in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen is entitled to reside free from terror," the attorney general wrote in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to share that footage with my office. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The form offers fields to upload images and video footage of the raid, plus a section to indicate location information. When submitting, submitters must mark a box that confirms that "authorities might employ any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."

Details of the ICE Action

The enforcement action, which witnesses say featured over fifty federal agents, took place in a popular neighborhood of Manhattan where fake products and additional items are commonly traded en masse – typically to sightseers.

Recordings of the incident show several covered and weaponized officers zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of locals trailed the officers through the streets. An military-style transport was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.

Official Reactions

During a Wednesday press conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four nationals were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be detained for no reason." He noted the persons were released on the following day with no charges filed.

"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is simply a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the military to prevent conflict that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Fury over the ICE raid escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the federal government chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, instead of protection. It has to end," a contender stated.

New York City immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.

"Federal officers targeted the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and riot gear to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and communities," remarked the head of a advocacy group.

Agency Rules

Official guidelines forbids the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has stated it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 American nationals have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the beginning of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide lately.

An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing federal operations are commonplace including allegations of force and abusive practices.

Most recently, a submission filed by legal entities claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in detention centers.
