Citizens have assembled around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.

A senior delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A lasting truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict governance of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere appears as home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist one woman explained: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the war to end in as payment for the release of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and locality districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the dusk arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the remains of several people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated another two fatalities had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, health workers stated.

The territory's health ministry announced 25 of the {territ
