Former Physician Charged with Assault Allegations Involving Thirty-Eight Patients

Prosecutors have announced that a former doctor now faces charges for committing assaults against 38 individuals who were under his care.

The Serious Charges

The accused, Nathaniel Spencer from Birmingham faces allegations of numerous sexual offences – including some against children younger than 13 – between 2017 and 2021.

One senior prosecutor commented, “Legal teams have diligently worked to support a thorough and intricate police inquiry, carefully reviewing the evidence to establish that there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial and that it is in the interest of justice.”

Scope of the Investigation

These allegations come after what investigators called a “complex investigation” into alleged sexual offences at two hospitals: the Royal Stoke university hospital and Russells Hall hospital.

The defendant will appear at the North Staffordshire justice centre on 20 January.

Breakdown of Offences

Prosecutors said the 45 sexual offences he is charged with:

  • Fifteen counts of assault.
  • 17 counts of assault by penetration.
  • 9 counts of sexual assault of a child under 13.
  • 3 counts of penetrative assault on a child under thirteen.
  • One count of attempted penetrative assault.
