US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert was issued at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an mean of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the US, could experience problems from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA advised travelers in the state to consult carriers about updated departure times.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected airline operations, including pilot training.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
