California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of California is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and strained its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Shows No Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This development came after weeks of heavy precipitation that replenished key lakes like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here included powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to extensive inundation, power outages, and tragic losses. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were deemed experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year eliminated those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

But, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with complete water security. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.

This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is too early to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance during the rest of the year.
