Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
